Thomas Telford (1757-1834)

Thomas Telford



Thomas Telford was born in Westerkirk, Dumfries, Scotland.   He was a stonemason, architect and civil engineer.  Telford moved to London in 1782 where, over a 20 year period, he was responsible for building approximately 120 bridges and 1,000 miles of road.


    Achievements include the construction of:

        Caledonian Canal, Scotland
        Menai Suspension Bridge, Wales
        Dean Bridge, Scotland
        Gotha Canal, Sweden
        Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Wales (aqueduct on the Ellesmere Canal,
          Cheshire, England) 

 
   In 1818 Telford helped found the Institute of Civil Engineers and became its first president.
