Scope and content: This series contains letterbooks, letters, and cablegrams relating to the construction of railways in Canada and Brazil. The bulk of the material highlights Ketchum's activities in connection with the promotion, financing, and construction of the Chignecto Ship Railway. It also sheds light on the technical, financial, and legal problems he faced as managing director of that project.

The bulk of correspondence is between Ketchum and railway financiers, contractors, sub-contractors, suppliers, and politicians. A few communications do not involve Ketchum, and a number of letters are signed by Ketchum's agents. Extracts of letters from B. Baker to Ketchum were probably prepared by Ketchum's clerks. A few technical drawings, estimates of costs, observations, and copies of personal letters of reference are included in the letterbooks.
