1. Thumbnail for Document 1 n.d. A copy of what was believed to be the oldest cotton bill of lading in existence.  Original dated 1751.  Appeared in the Cotton Gazette (Feb. 3, 1912).  Reprinted on an unknown date.
2. Thumbnail for Document 2 1812: Sept. 23 A bill of lading for the ship Canada.  Items (mostly timber) to be delivered to Plymouth. 

Signed by G[eorge] M[ichael] Greaves, Master of the ship.

3. Thumbnail for Document 3 1815 Aug. 1 - 1822 Dec. 31 An account book containing statements of cash paid and received by Robert Rankin.  Cash paid includes predominantly personal items such as clothing and food. Account book also includes an outline of Robert Rankins travels/places of residence.

1829: Feb. 4 A travel diary kept by Allan Gilmour while on a tour in America. 
This diary tracks Gilmours journey beginning in Quebec, continuing through Ontario, and ending in New York State.  Includes details such as weather, descriptions of the various places travelled, as well as key events which occurred.

A partial typescript letter sent to John Rankin with reference to his book.  Includes personal anecdotes and observations concerning  people such as John Gilmour, Allan Gilmour, the Fergusons, Alexander Rankin and R[obert] R[ankin]. Includes handwritten annotations by John Rankin.

1828 A travel diary which includes remarks by Allan Gilmour Senior, Allan Gilmour Junior and William Ritchie, on a tour from Saint John through the United States to Quebec.  Contains thoughts and observations concerning events which occurred throughout the voyage. At the back are notes on the distances between destinations (both on land and water), as well as a list of addresses of people whom the authors were led to believe respectable.

The collection contains an edited,  transcribed version of this document which was annotated by Robert Rankin in September, 1946.  The annotation includes a short history of the Gilmour and Rankin Firm, taken from a book entitled The History of Our Firm, written by John Rankin in 1921.
