James O. Dineen biography project fonds [textual record]. -- 1997 - 1998 . -- 2 cm of textual records

Administrative history: In the spring of 1997, the University of New Brunswick Faculty of Engineering commissioned Glenda Turner of Fredericton, New Brunswick to write a biography of James O. Dineen, a former professor of electrical engineering, dean of engineering and president of UNB. Former colleagues, students, and friends of Dr. Dineen, were asked to submit anecdotes and remembrances of him to the department for possible inclusion in the commissioned biography. These letters constitute the content of this fonds. In addition, Robert J. Kavanagh, a former colleague of Dr. Dineen, supplied 2 bundles of correspondence to Ms. Turner in 1998 and 1999 in connection with the project. The Dineen biography is to be published by the Association of Professional Engineers, possibly in the year 2000.

As another way of honoring Dr. James Dineen, UNB's Faculty of Engineering hosted a Jim Dineen Day on 20 March 1997. Participants in the informal, round-table discussion shared personal and professional remembrances of his life and times. Some of the letters contained in this fonds were submitted by Dr. Dineen's former colleagues and friends who were unable to attend the Dineen Day celebration.

Custodial history: Former colleagues, students, friends and family members of the late Dr. James O. Dineen forwarded the bulk these materials to the Faculty of Engineering in the spring of 1997. A few letters and e-mails were sent directly to Glenda Turner.

Scope and content: This fonds consists of a single file containing 14 letters or e-mails that highlight the life, professional activities and achievements of Dr. James O. Dineen during his 33-year association with the University of New Brunswick. In particular, these communications discuss his dealings with students and faculty, UNB's relationship with NB Power, the development of the electrical engineering department, and the growth of UNB programmes, as well as personal and family matters.

Title based on contents of the fonds.

Glenda Turner deposited this fonds with the University of New Brunswick Archives and Special Collections Department in early March 2000.

Additional information relating to the life of James O. Dineen and to the James O. Dineen biography project is located in the Robert J. Kavanagh fonds (UA RG 353a). Archives and Special Collections Department also houses the James O. Dineen fonds (UA RG 347).

Further accruals are expected.
