Scope and content: This series documents Zdenek Valenta's early years as an Associate Professor at UNB (1958-1963). It also documents his tenure as department chairman (1963-72). The series also reflects the development of the chemistry graduate school as well as the contributions Karel Wiesner made to the growth of chemistry at UNB.

The series includes correspondence, departmental and committee reports, completed applications for research grants, research reports, reports of sample analyses, draft scientific articles, architectural plans, examination question sheets, and notices relating to policy and procedure. The series also contains departmental, committee and organizational minutes.

Correspondence is included in all 5 subseries. It is primarily between chemistry department faculty members, especially Valenta and Wiesner, and UNB students, administrators and colleagues as well as academics, research scientists and administrators associated with corporations, research institutes and academic institutions.

The correspondence discusses the awarding of scholarships, fellowships, grants and prizes, the ordering of supplies and equipment, the hiring of faculty and staff, and ongoing and completed research. It also discusses students' progress, their academic abilities and employability, university courses, and academic programmes. Some correspondence is of a personal nature. A few letters are written in Czech.

Of special interest in subseries 3 is file 136, Macaulay, B.F. 1968-1972, which contains materials relating to renovations planned for the chemistry building.

Also of interest are two files: subseries 3, no. 137, Mackay, President, C.B. 1966-1968 and subseries 5, no. 164-1, National Research Council - Natural Products Research Centre both of which contain material relating to the proposed establishment of a Natural Products Research Centre at UNB.

Arrangement of subseries 1, 2, 3 and 4 is alphabetical. Subseries 5 is arranged randomly.
