Circulation Services

Student Assistants may work in any of the following three libraries – the Harriet Irving (HIL), Science & Forestry or Engineering & Computer Science. Shifts are mostly weekends or evenings (until 10 pm) with a limited number of weekday/daytime shifts available. Total time commitment is 8-10 hours/week.

Duties include:

  • Checking in and checking out materials and various other circulation tasks
  • Completing payment transactions
  • Reshelving items
  • Helping to maintain a tidy and orderly book collection through shelf reading and cleaning
  • Answering patrons’ “where is” and “how to” questions or directing them appropriately

Applicants must be able to accurately order sequences of letters and numbers and be physically capable of moving carts of books and shelving them.

Archives & Special Collections (including Microforms) (Harriet Irving)

UNB Archives & Special Collections- including Microforms - Student Assistants aid in completing ongoing projects, working a maximum of 10 hours per week, in the hours between 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Project examples include scanning and digitization, basic processing, transcription, finding aid creation and improvement, listing, putting up or taking down storage shelving, moving boxes of archival material, stacks maintenance, boxing, and inventory. Material formats can be archival manuscript, book, thesis, photograph, digital file, audio tape, video tape, microform, digital spreadsheet, word file. Experience in research and reading handwritten cursive is helpful. Detail-orientation, reliability, and ability to work with minimal supervision is preferred.

Centre for Digital Scholarship (Harriet Irving)

Centre for Digital Scholarship (CDS) Student Assistants work with either Digital Imaging or Digital Publishing Services on a wide variety of projects that support the UNB community. We offer a comfortable production environment with flexible hours. These positions are a maximum of 10 hours per week and are typically completed Monday to Friday 8am-4pm. Duties include: scanning, image processing, quality control, HTML markup, metadata creation, and other tasks as required. All training provided. Attention to detail and organizational skills are an asset.

Reference (Harriet Irving)

HIL Research Help Desk Student Assistants provide reference services primarily during afternoon, evening, and weekend shifts.  Main duties include responding to informational and directional questions – experience using UNB Libraries’ resources, strong public service skills, demonstrated problem solving skills, and the ability to work under pressure in a constantly changing busy environment is required.

Research Commons (Harriet Irving)

The Harriet Irving Library Research Commons is an interdisciplinary learning environment that aims to further innovation at UNB. Student Assistant positions at the Research Commons include shifts in the Fabrication Lab or at the Welcome Kiosk, or a combination of both. The successful candidate(s) will assist and support community members who use the equipment and software at the Research Commons. Main duties include operating/hosting the Fabrication Lab and/or the Welcome Kiosk, troubleshooting, and enforcing Research Commons policies. Candidates should have strong problem-solving skills, a desire to teach/help patrons and either experience or a strong interest in emerging technologies (ex. 3D printers, Lightboard studios, 3D scanners etc.).

Copyright & Digital Delivery (Harriet Irving)

The Copyright and Digital Delivery student assistant works as part of a team to ensure accurate, timely delivery of library materials to UNB patrons and Libraries worldwide. The student will be responsible for:

  • Retrieving material from library collection
  • Scanning articles requested by UNB Library patrons and libraries worldwide
  • Packaging material for delivery by Canada Post
  • Reporting issues or discrepancies to Supervisor to ensure accuracy of catalogue records and of requests
  • Assisting with other departmental functions such as Storage retrieval and stack maintenance

Library Services

Student Assistants at the Hans W. Klohn Commons work as part of a team offering quality public service in a supervised environment at the Library Services Desk. Duties include checking in and out materials, shelving, cleaning, shelf reading, assisting patrons with the use of the library’s resources as well as copying, scanning and printing issues and other duties as assigned. Student Assistants are scheduled to work evening and weekend shifts averaging approximately 8 hours per week. Shift hours will increase during extended hours.

Student Assistants will be asked for their class schedule on the application form. The libraries are open weekdays, evenings, and weekends. Generally, students work approximately 10 hours / week.
