Mr. Frederic Sherman,

28 East 85th Street,
New York, New York

Dear Mr. Sherman:

I thank you for your letter of July 9 regarding
"The Painter's Holiday," but am afraid that I must ask
you for a little more information.

I am completing at last my bibliography of
Carman for
the study of his work which I have made for the
Ryerson Press'
"Makers of Canadian Literature" series, and as an example of
the form I am following, give below my description of the
second edition of "The Painter's Holiday,".

The Painter's Holiday, and Other Poems. New York:
Privately Printed. 1911. Demy Octavo, blue paper boards,
white paper back, pp. 43 (-I). Edition: 150 copies, on
French hand-made paper. "Privately printed by Frederic
Fairchild Sherman."

May I ask whether the above description would
apply also to the suppressed first edition of "The Painter's Holiday," with the substitution of the word "Italian" for
"French" in the reference to the edition? Yes except that there were 3
copies of the first printing on Roman Vellum (skin) which as well as the paper
copies were destroyed because the presswork did not satisfy me.

An early answer as to this point would be much appreciated.

I am not just sure when my Carman study will be out,
but it will not be before Christmas. I shall, at any rate,
send you a copy when it appears.

Yours truly,
R.H. Hathaway
