My dear McArthur:
Toronto,
Jan. 26, 1923.
Mr. Peter McArthur,
Appin,
Ont.
I send you herewith a clipping from The Montreal Gazette of
Jan. 4 which has a reference to you, and which you may be glad to have, if
it has not come your way already.
Have you had any recent word from
Carman? I got a card from him at
Christmas, mailed from
Los Angeles, but there was no indication where he
was staying or how a letter could reach him. Has your plan for him to
visit you fallen through?
I see that he has been invited and has consented to be present at the
University of New Brunswick Convocation in May. He has, as you know, a D.C.
from that University, given many years ago. I would like to see the Univer—
sity of Toronto confer its degree of Doctors of Letters on him, and feel
that such action is long over due. I have mentioned the matter to some of
my University friends more than once, but without result, but I am going to
bring it to their notice again.
By the way, I was told in all earnestness the other day that
Carman
is going to marry a Canadian girl, or, at any rate, that the girl has such
an expectation. Her name and place of residence was given me in confidence,
and so I cannot divulge them. The thing seems absurd, but, of course, it is
the unexpected that happens. I wonder whether you have heard anything about
it?
Let me hear from you at your convenience.
Yours truly,
