Mr.Mitchell Kennerley,
New York,
N.Y.
Dear Sir:
Your letter of Nov.29 and also the copy of "Modern
Love"
arrived in due time. I shall be glad to
receive list of your
Carman duplicates, but with the holidays approaching it may be that I shall not be
able to take much advantage just now of the opportunity thus offered
of adding to my Carman collection. This, I might say, is not very ex-
tensive (comparatively, that is), consisting of only some 17items, or
less than one-half of the items in the line of Carman books known to
me. I have some rarities, it is true, but those that I have not far out-
number those that I have.
Your statement that you have a complete set of Carman interests
me greatly, but I'd wager that you haven't a copy of Carman's
first
publication in book form. This is a small quarto booklet of some dozen
pages, containing Carman's poem, "Low Tide on the Grand
Pre,"each verse
occupying a page. The publication bears no date,,but it was
issued in Toronto by the Copp,Clark Co.in their "Canadian series of
Booklets," before Carman took up his residence in New York, the author-
ship of the poem being given as "Bliss Carmen (sic),Fredericton,New Brunswick
My copy of this, which I rescued from the 5-cent counter of a second
hand book shop here a year or so ago,is the only one I have ever seen
or heard of,and I doubt if many others are in existence. The Copp,Clark
people tell me that they believe only a few copies were ever sold, and
that what were left went up in the big fire here five years ago, which
Could you,I wonder, tell me where I might get a copy of
John
Myers
O'Hara's"Poetry of Sappho,"privately
printed in Chicago this year?
I should like to compare the book with Carman's "Sappho,"which
it seems
to resemble-in general aim,at least.
Perhaps the copy of my bookplate which you will find enclosed
herewith may not be wholly without interest to you."A poor thing, but
mine own."
Yours truly, Address: 200 McCaul Street
