Mr. Mitchell Kennerley,

New York,
N.Y.
Dear Sir:

The copy of your edition of
Houseman's"A Shropshire Lad"
which I got from you a few days ago has proved to be so attractive to
several friends that these have asked me to get copies for them. Please
therefore, send me four copies of thisbook, together with one copy of
"The Early Poems of Rossetti" in the sameseries, in payment for which
I enclose herewith $1.85, 25 cents of this amount being for postage.

You will find enclosed also a clipping, which is taken from The

Toronto Mail andEmpire of Saturdaylast, and which may be of interest
to you. When I read the little poem quoted therein, where, I asked myself
had I read it before? And thereupon, instinctively almost, I reached
for a little book bearing upon its' title-page the name of
Mitchell
Kennerleyas publisher, andentitled"Modern Love: an Anthology,"and
turning over a page or two came upon this very poem, the authorship
of which was given as "unknown." On comparison, I found the poem as
published in the Mail and Empire to vary slightly textually from that
as published in Modern Love,” while while the four verses of the latter had
been compressed into three in the newspaper version, the change, in
my judgement, making the poem just what the writer of the articledescribed it, “perfect.” May I ask whether the authorship of the poem is
really unknown, and if not, whether the hand of the compiler and publisher
I (I assume these to be one in the same) of"Modern Love" had anything
to do with the writing of it?

Yours truly,
